Inspiration

Traveling to France's Côte d'Azur with its characteristic lavender fields inspired us to take a closer look at this wonderfully fragrant plant and its many positive as well as relaxing properties and to develop products that bring them closer to you.

Use

The flowers and leaves are used as a herbal medicine, either in the form of lavender oil or as an herbal tea, to relieve symptoms such as anxiety and difficulty falling asleep.

The flowers are also used as a culinary herb, mostly as part of the North American version of the French herb blend, Herbes de Provence.

Diluted with a carrier oil, lavender essential oil is often used as a relaxant in massage therapy. Home use products such as lotions, eye pillows (using lavender flowers or the essential oil itself) and bath oils, etc. are also used. Both the petals and the oil are the most popular ingredients for handmade soaps.

Dried lavender flowers and lavender essential oil are also used to prevent clothes moths that don't like their scent.[citation needed]

Lavandula angustifolia is on the Tasmania Fire Service's list of flame retardant plants, meaning it is suitable for growing in a building protection zone.

Origin

Lavandula angustifolia, formerly L. officinalis, is a flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean region (Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, etc.). Common names include lavender, true lavender or English lavender (although this is not native to England), but also garden lavender, common lavender and narrow-leaved lavender.

Etymology

The species name angustifolia is Latin and means "narrow leaf". It was formerly known as Lavandula officinalis, indicating its medicinal properties.

Growth

It is a strongly aromatic shrub that grows 1 to 2 m tall. The leaves are evergreen, 2 - 6 cm long and 4 - 6 mm wide. The flowers are pinkish purple (lavender) and appear in 2 - 8 cm long racemes at the top of 10 - 30 cm long slender leafless stalks.

English lavender is commonly grown as an ornamental plant. It's popular for its colorful blooms, fragrance, and ability to get by with little water usage. It does not do well in consistently wet soil and can benefit from improved drainage provided by inorganic mulch materials such as gravel. It thrives best in Mediterranean climates similar to its homeland, characterized by wet winters and dry summers. It is fairly cold tolerant and is generally considered hardy to USDA zone 5. It tolerates acidic soil but prefers neutral to alkaline soil and can be short lived under certain conditions.
